Shin splints is a non-specific term that really refers to an injury in the leg, so its not a particularly useful as a diagnosis. It’s a term that has been used by the medical and lay community’s to describe an overuse injury in the leg of runners and other athlete. It takes it’s name from an injury that can occur in horses. It is probably time that the term was no longer used, but it’s so widely used that nothing is going to change soon. The true syndrome of shin splints is medically known as medial tibial stress syndrome. While there is some debate over the exact nature of the injury, but it does appear that shin splints results from inflammation of one or more structures where the muscles inserts in to the shin or tibia bone in the leg. Up to 15% of running injuries are shin splints.
