It has come up in a number of places now, the question as if toning shoes, such as Skechers Shape Ups or MBT’s can help shin splints. The first answer is there is no research to show that it does. The longer answer is:

Toning shoes are show that have design features to make them unstable (such a rocker sole or ‘wobble board’). The purpose of this instability is to make the muscles work harder to give them a ‘tone’ up which is how this class of shoes was given its name. These shoes will alter the biomechanics of the foot and leg and the evidence is that they do make the muscles work harder. What is lacking in the evidence is that if this change in muscles activity really does give you an additional work out or tone up and if this can help with problems. That does not mean that there is anything wrong with toning shoes and plenty of people find this change in mechanics to be helpful.

Will it help shin splints? Probably not. The only way it can help is that is the change in the mechanics and muscles activity from using toning shoes addresses a deficit in the mechanics and muscles activity that might have caused the shin splints in the first place. I can not see how those deficits that the shoes would address are a factor in the different causes of shin splints.

Having said that, there is probably a good reason why a runner might want to use a toning shoe. The change in gait from wearing them is a good way to mix up the biomechanics and this may have a positive spin off.

What are the symptoms of shin splints?

As some use the term shin splints to refer to any leg pain, so the symptoms can be pretty much anything in the leg!

The true shin splints or medial tibial stress syndrome symptoms are:

Pain over the inside or medial lower part of the shin or tibia bone

This area of pain or discomfort is generally 10-15cm long

This pain is usually present on palpation or probing before it is painful when running

As it progresses, the pain is usually present at the start of a run, but initially does tend to ease off as the run continues

The pain often returns after the run is over and can be worse the next day, especially in the morning

On palpation, there is usually a lumpy feeling along that lower edge of the shin or tibia bone

Occasionally there might be some swelling and rarely some redness over the area

It is important that the symptoms of shin splints is differentiated from other causes of leg pain in runners, such as:

Differential Diagnosis of “Shin Splints”

Tibia or fibula stress fractures

Chronic exertional compartment syndrome

Nerve or artery entrapment

Deep vein thrombosis

Muscle strains or tears

Shin splints is a non-specific term that really refers to an injury in the leg, so its not a particularly useful as a diagnosis. It’s a term that has been used by the medical and lay community’s to describe an overuse injury in the leg of runners and other athlete. It takes it’s name from an injury that can occur in horses. It is probably time that the term was no longer used, but it’s so widely used that nothing is going to change soon. The true syndrome of shin splints is medically known as medial tibial stress syndrome. While there is some debate over the exact nature of the injury, but it does appear that shin splints results from inflammation of one or more structures where the muscles inserts in to the shin or tibia bone in the leg. Up to 15% of running injuries are shin splints.
