Shin Splints

Shin splints (technically known as medial tibial stress syndrome or MTSS) is probably the most common injury that runners get. It can also be one of the more frustrating injuries. Shin splints is somewhat of an old fashioned terms and really just means a ‘sore leg’, but the term is still widely used in running circles. Shin splints is an inflammatory reaction along the insertion of muscles on the inside (or medial) side of the shin (or tibia) bone. Shin splints is due to a combination of training errors, biomechanical problems and probably inadequate running shoes. The management of shin splints is to address these issues and finding ways to keep fitness while it is managed.
